Your boiler is responsible for roughly 60% of your total energy bill. If the unit heating your home is over 10 years old, there’s a strong chance it’s running well below the efficiency levels of a modern replacement. That means higher bills, inconsistent heating, and a system that’s one cold morning away from giving up entirely.
At Pluto Plumbers, we carry out professional boiler installations across Hertfordshire, Watford, Rickmansworth, and the surrounding areas. Every installation is completed by our Gas Safe registered engineers (registration 233221), and we work with all major brands including Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal, and Baxi. No hidden costs. No surprises. Just a properly installed boiler that keeps your home warm for years to come.
Most gas boilers have a working lifespan of around 10 to 15 years. After that point, efficiency drops noticeably and breakdowns become more frequent. Even if your boiler still fires up, an older unit could be operating at 70% to 80% efficiency. A modern A rated condensing boiler runs at over 90%.
That gap adds up fast. According to the Energy Saving Trust, replacing an old G rated boiler with a new A rated model could save a household up to £580 per year on heating bills, depending on the property type.
Your boiler rarely fails without warning. There are usually clear signals that something is wrong before a full breakdown happens. Keep an eye out for these common indicators.
If your boiler is showing any of these symptoms and it’s past the 10 year mark, a replacement will almost always be more cost effective than continued repairs. At some point, the repair bills overtake what you’d spend on a brand new installation.
Before any work begins, we carry out a full survey of your property and your existing heating system. This tells us the correct output (measured in kW) your new boiler needs to deliver. Getting this right matters. A boiler that’s too small won’t heat your home properly, and one that’s oversized will cycle on and off constantly, wasting energy and shortening its lifespan.
We’ll also assess your pipework, flue route, and any changes needed to bring the installation in line with current Building Regulations.
A straightforward like for like combi boiler swap typically takes one day. If you’re converting from a conventional system to a combi, or relocating the boiler to a different room, the job can take two to three days depending on the amount of pipework involved.
Our engineers will remove your old boiler, fit the new unit, connect it to your gas supply and heating system, and carry out a full system flush (power flush) to clear any sludge or debris from your radiators and pipes. That flush protects the new boiler from day one and helps it run at peak efficiency.
Every new boiler installation in England requires Building Regulations notification. Your installer must notify the local authority within 30 days of completing the work. Once that notification goes through, you’ll receive a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate in the post.
This certificate belongs to your property. You’ll need it if you ever sell your home, and many insurance providers ask for it as proof that the installation was done correctly. Our Gas Safe registered engineers handle this entire process for you as part of every installation.
The honest answer is that it depends on your property and the work involved. A straightforward combi boiler replacement in the same location typically costs between £2,000 and £4,500 including the boiler, labour, and materials. More complex jobs, such as system conversions, boiler relocations, or properties that need additional pipework, will sit towards the higher end of that range.
Several factors influence the final price. The brand and model of boiler you choose plays a big part. So does the condition of your existing pipework, the location of your gas meter, flue routing, and whether your system needs a full flush or filter. Properties in London and the South East also tend to carry higher labour costs.
Absolutely. A modern condensing boiler converts over 90% of the gas it burns into usable heat. If your current unit is running at 70% efficiency, you’re losing 30p out of every pound you spend on gas. Over a full winter, that waste adds up to hundreds of pounds.
Most new boilers also come with manufacturer warranties of up to 10 years when installed by an approved engineer. That gives you a decade of protection against unexpected repair costs. To keep that warranty valid, you’ll need an annual boiler service each year. Compare that to an ageing boiler where parts are becoming harder to source and every callout is another bill you didn’t budget for.
We install all major boiler brands and will recommend the right one based on your property size, hot water demand, and budget. Here are the four brands our customers choose most often.
Worcester Bosch is the UK’s most recognised boiler brand and a consistent winner of Which? Best Buy awards. Their Greenstar range covers everything from compact combi boilers for flats and smaller homes through to high output models like the Greenstar 8000 for larger properties with multiple bathrooms. Worcester Bosch offers a 10 year guarantee (not just a warranty) when installed by an approved engineer.
Vaillant’s ecoTEC range is respected across the industry for build quality and energy efficiency. The ecoTEC Plus is one of the most popular combi boilers in the UK and uses a stainless steel heat exchanger, which tends to outlast the aluminium alternatives found in some competing brands. Vaillant was also the first manufacturer to earn the Quiet Mark across its full domestic range.
Ideal offers a strong balance between performance and value. The Logic Max range is compact, efficient, and widely installed across the UK. For homeowners who want a reliable boiler without paying premium brand prices, Ideal is a solid choice that doesn’t compromise on quality.
Baxi manufactures all its boilers in the UK, which means excellent parts availability and fast warranty support. The Baxi 800 series comes with a built in magnetic filter to protect your heating system from sludge, and the compact design fits neatly into smaller spaces. Baxi offers up to 10 year warranties and their parts are often more affordable than the bigger brands.
This isn’t optional. UK law requires that only Gas Safe registered engineers carry out work on gas boilers. That includes installation, repair, and servicing. An unregistered installer puts your home at risk of gas leaks, carbon monoxide poisoning, and fire.
Beyond safety, using a registered engineer also protects your investment. Most manufacturer warranties are only valid if the boiler was installed by a qualified, registered professional. If an unregistered person fits your boiler, the warranty is void from day one. Your home insurance may also refuse to pay out for any damage caused by an unregistered installation.
You can verify any engineer’s Gas Safe credentials on the Gas Safe Register website before they start work.
We’re a Gas Safe registered business (registration 233221) based in Watford, covering Hertfordshire and the surrounding areas including Rickmansworth, Chorleywood, Croxley Green, St Albans, Hemel Hempstead, and beyond. When you book with us, you get a local engineer who knows the area, not a call centre routing your job to whoever is available.
Every quote we provide is transparent. The price you’re given is the price you pay. We don’t add hidden charges for removing your old boiler, flushing your system, or notifying Building Control. It’s all included as standard.
We install all major brands, and we’ll always recommend the boiler that fits your home rather than the one with the biggest margin. Whether it’s a straightforward combi swap or a full system conversion, we handle the entire process from survey to sign off.
